MAUKE
Island lies 241 kilometers northeast of Rarotonga. The geological
formation of the island is similar to that of Atiu with some fine caves located
in the cliffs of the coral reef. Also, like Atiu, Mauke has several beautiful
white sandy beaches. Swimming, however, is limited due to the makatea
(coral reef). Mauke is basically flat which is very conducive to walking.
There is a road which completely encircles the island and it is a very pleasant
3 hours walk.
Vaitaongo Cave is one of the many caves found on Mauke and is a 10 minute walk
from Ngatiarua. It has banyan trees growing inside and a clear fresh water
pool under the overhanging stalactites. Swimming in the cave is a perfect
way to cool off on a hot summer's day.
The best beaches are on the
south side of the island and are deserted with long stretches of clean white
sand encompassing a turquoise crystal clear lagoon. Mauke is a perfect
island to explore onfoot or motorbike. Motorbike rentals are available
for hire.
Don't miss a visit to the Cook Islands Christian Church, one of the most fascinating
buildings in the Cook Islands. The church has an almost Mohammedan flavor
with its long rectangular courtyard, tall gateways and interior decoration
of crescents and interlocking arches. Due to an old dispute between
the two villages, the church was divided in the center and each side is decorated
differently. The dividing partition has been removed, but dual gateways
lead to dual doors, one for each village. Colorful designs are painted
in green, pink, blue, yellow, and white. Inset into the railing in front
of the pulpit are 9 old Chilean pesos.
Bicycle Tours are available and last
approximately 2-3 hours visiting sights around the island including the beaches
and inland bush and caves. For the more adventurous there is SUPATA’S
SAFARI TOURS
which lasts approx 2-3 ½ hours. The Safari Tour takes you off road
4x4 to the Banyan Trees, plantations, caves and beaches. You will experience
a variety of local fruits and perhaps Supata will climb a coconut tree for
a cool, refreshing Nu (drinking coconut).
Both tours can be arranged by request.
Don't leave Mauke without buying one of the unique pieces of handicraft
available. The women weave fine pandanus mats, baskets, purses, and
hats with brilliant borders of blue, red, yellow and orange along one end
or colorful geometric designs. The men carve attractive wooden bowls
and canoes.
